Project Title

Testing of an ammonia sorbent for emission reduction from pig manure under practical conditions

Project description

The decrease of ammonia emissions from the agricultural sector is urgently needed to reduce the eutrophication of non-agricultural ecosystems, indirect nitrous oxide emissions, particulate matter release and soil acidification, as well as to improve the N use efficiency of manure used. Possible mitigation measures focus on ammonia losses from livestock housing as well as during slurry application in the field. To bind ammonia a sorbent material based on carboxylic acid derivatives is available. To derive recommendations for the application of this sorbent in animal as well as in plant production investigations are carried out under practical farming conditions focusing on production (e.g. daily weight gain of the fattening pigs, N uptake and yield of wheat) as well as on economic aspects. The objective of the project is the development and evaluation of a practicable strategy for farmers to substantially reduce ammonia emissions at farm level. The entire value chain from pig fattening via application of the resulting manure on the field to the final assessment of the produced wheat as a basis for feeding stuff in pig production is considered.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

Subproject 1 A total of 7 fattening rounds were carried out during the stable trials. The NH3 reduction was between 61 and 84%, depending on the cycle. Overall, it was confirmed that the use of the sorbent based on citric acid reduces the NH3 content in the house air in the test compartment by an average of 73%. As a result, both the reduction requirements from the TA-Luft and the requirements of the Animal Welfare Livestock Husbandry Ordinance were met throughout the entire test period. A positive trend was also discernible for the odour reduction prescribed in TA-Luft.
The product costs for the procedure amount to about 20 € per animal place and the direct free service (DkfL) is 67.62 € per fattening place and year. After deduction of the product costs from the DkfL, this results in a DkfL of € 47.60 per animal place and year for the project. The DkfL of conventional systems are between € 23.20 and € 45.70. Although no total costs could be calculated ... (see final report)&
