Effect of phosphorus recycling products from the cascade utilisation of sewage sludge in Central Hessen
Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient element for all living beings, which cannot be replaced. However, the deposits are very limited worldwide. A recycling economy that returns P from secondary raw material sources and makes it available to agriculture as P fertilizer is therefore indispensable. The highest P recycling potential of secondary raw material sources was found in the wastewater path, and it is also legally required to recover P from the wastewater. However, innovations in the ‘Sewage Sludge Ordinance’ prohibit large sewage treatment plants from directly recycling sewage sludge in agriculture. New strategies for the efficient use of phosphorus are therefore necessary.
The aim of the project is to investigate the effect of phosphorus recycling products from the multiple use of sewage sludge in the Central Hesse region on the yield and quality of the harvested products and to establish a P material flow management system. The fertilizer production is preceded by a thermal use, which should ensure that undesirable substances are removed without residues.
Results can be found in the final report.
