Project Title

DigiPig

Project description

Pig farmers must carry out both a self-inspection on the farm and daily animal inspections. This involves collecting data that can be better utilised through digitalisation and linking. The routinely collected data is to be analysed. To this end, animal welfare characteristics and the values of control instruments such as water meters and animal scales are to be recorded, documented and evaluated via an app. The aim is to provide pig farmers with a tool with which they can recognise and rectify changes in animal welfare at an early stage. The success of measures can be monitored and animal management can be measurably improved.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

The design and programming of the "DigiPig" app shows a high degree of practical relevance, ensured by the close cooperation within the OG. When selecting the animal and management-related indicators, both current research results and indicator recommendations from OG farmers were integrated. This resulted in some new indicators (= direct sunlight) and differing definitions.

During the practical use of the app, it was found that the selection of indicators should be streamlined and the evaluation simplified. As a result, the training courses on indicator collection were also adapted to the needs of the farmers.

Once the documentation intervals have been successfully recorded, farmers can call up a graphical representation of defined values (= water consumption, comparison of actual/target temperature, animal losses).
