Project Title

Cow-dependent calf rearing

Project description

The aim of the project is the development of a tool that supports milk producers in the introduction and further development of the process of "cow-dependent calf rearing" on their own farms. This includes calf rearing by using suckler cows and nurse cows. In the end action guidelines and an internet-based consulting tool should be available for doing so. The effects of cow-dependent calf rearing on the health of cows and cattle will be studied by accompanying data collection and evaluation on the practical farms.

The insights gained in the project regarding farm surveys, scientific analyses and stable school discussions are processed and summarized in a practical way. The prototype of the guidelines is tested, evaluated and improved by the companies involved. The final version of the guidelines will be published and made available as an online tool. In addition, a homepage will be created that serves as a platform for all people interested in learning about and exchanging information on the breeding system of the "cow-dependent calf rearing".

Results focusing on practiceorientation

The majority of the rearing calves were assessed as healthy over the entire course of the project. The recording of weight development revealed an average daily gain of one kilogramme. The udder bonitures revealed a drier teat skin in the lactating cows (mothers as well as wet nurses). In all forms of cow-based rearing, a reduced fat content was observed in lactating cows. The protein content was similar in both groups studied. Calves that were kept on a separate pasture without cows showed an increased parasitic load over the course of the year. This was not the case for calves that grazed together with older cows ("hoover effect", known from suckler cow husbandry). The organisation of the weaning process is handled differently on the project farms. This was recorded and compared so that interested farms can obtain suggestions here.
