Project Title

Testing easily digestible red and white clover pellets in feed for laying hens

Project description

Protein is an essential element in the feed of laying hens. Currently the farmers of the operational group feed their laying hens with pellets containing sesame seed meal as source of protein. In the project the group wants to test and evaluate red and white clover as alternative sources of protein in organic egg production. The project is divided into five sections: a) Production of red and white clover pellets as easily digestible high-protein feedstuff for laying hens, b) Analysis of nutritional values of the produced feedstuffs, c) Optimizing the composition of the feed by a poultry expert (using sesame seed meal, red clover, and white clover as respective sources of protein), d) Conduct of two series of on-farm feeding trials testing the three optimized feedstuffs, e) Evaluation of the feedstuffs regarding laying hen performance, egg quality, etc.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

The feeding study with red clover as feedstock component consistently effected output losses regarding the number and weight of eggs. Therefore, it is not recommended, neither economically nor with regard to appropriate animal nutrition. White clover proved to present a more appropriate feedstock component with regard to both number and weight of eggs. However, account should be taken of the fact that, as yet, still a certain amount of e.g. potato protein is required to assure an optimal supply of amino acids. Finding a ration-design, in which these components can be omitted, is identified as a future task.
