Project Title

Process engineering for sustainable application of biostimulants with mycorrhiza in agriculture of soybean, corn and potatoe

Project description

Scarce and expensive resources (especially phosphate) and the requirement of a sustainable economy require new concepts in plant nutrition. Mycorrhizal soil additives improve soil life, nutrient availability and drought tolerance significantly, they thus have a positive effect on plant development and health. Use of available machines (Microgranulator) and their adaptation to the application proces will guarantee that an optimal mycorrhization of the crop is obtained under the lowest possible costs. Field trials in maize (corn, organic), soybean (organic, application in combination with rhizobia) and potatoe (conventional) will be establishes. Top priority is the practical approach: The technology for mycorrhiza application must be effectively and easily integrated into the agricultural operation. For the cooperation the participating farmers are an important prerequisite. Preliminary tests for two growing seasons have been able to bring promising initial results for: grain yield in maize (bio) and potato tuber yield (conventional) with reduced mineral P and N fertilization.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

The aim of the AMF-Agri project was to support efficient and resource-saving nutrient management within farming systems. The automated application of mycorrhiza in the field proved to strengthen nutrient uptake and growth in (maize) plants with the same nutrient availability/fertilization. This is desirable from the point of view of sustainability, as this method binds nutrients in the plant biomass to a greater extent and thus reduces the escape into the atmosphere or the leaching into aquipher. From an economic point of view, higher nutrient contents in the crop plants and improved growth are the prerequisites for farmers to be able to compensate for the additional costs arising from mycorrhiza application. Particularly in the maize trials, a site-specific effect of the mycorrhiza applied was determined. The efficacy was increased especially under unfavourable soil conditions and led to a lower yield variability in the mycorrhizal variants. ... (see final report)
