Project Title

N efficiency in agriculture

Project description

The aim of this innovation project is to identify and to demonstrate measures that contribute to the reduction of nutrient losses from arable crops. The focus of the project is on the influence of crop rotation on the N transfer between cultures as well as the adapted N fertilization.   The project idea came from the specific needs of agricultural practice, to redesign and develop innovative crop rotation and fertilization concepts for conventional agriculture under changing conditions. An important contribution to a more sustainable and resource-efficient agriculture can be expected from this. Specifically, regional recommendations for action will be developed for Schleswig-Holstein agriculture which show how grain legumes can be integrated into the crop rotation, N losses reduced, and fertilization recommendations optimized.   From the combination of crop rotation system comparisons, as well as the adaptation and practical testing of model-based fertilizer recommendations on Schleswig-Holstein's arable farms, knowledge and application experience can be expected that result in the production of advisory measures for N efficient agriculture.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

The results of the OnFarm Research and exact trials show that the model for determining fertiliser requirements for winter wheat provides plausible estimates with regard to the adjustment of N fertiliser requirements for the 3rd application. In crop years 2016 and 2018, for example, a reduced quality application was recommended for most locations due to the low yield expectations. In 2017, it was already recognised at the start of vegetation that leaching losses were particularly low in the autumn of the sowing year and that an increased nitrate supply in the soil was therefore likely. The exact trials showed that the model recommendations always led to balance surpluses of less than 50 kg N/ha. At the same time, higher contribution margins were often achieved compared to the fertiliser requirement calculation according to the Fertiliser Ordinance. The Nmin dynamics in the leaching-prone period varied significantly in some cases between the preceding crop-following crop combinations
