Lupus Repel: Safeguarding grazing livestock through applied wildlife management
Wolves have been living permanently in Germany again since 2000 and in Hesse since spring 2020. The return of wolves to Hesse poses a challenge for the management of grazing animals. The use of conventional livestock protection measures such as electric fences and livestock guarding dogs is very labour-intensive. The project is working on a user-friendly and environmentally friendly method for protecting grazing animals and preserving pasture animal husbandry. The project focuses on the development of a scent and an associated dispenser system to deter wolves. To this end, the volatile organic components of biomass are identified for the development of a deterrent scent and then statically analysed using a test set-up in the project farms and wildlife parks. In addition, GPS monitoring of the grazing animals to be protected will be used and the data obtained will be used to optimise the dispenser system for practical application. In future, the system is to be used in conjunction with other herd protection measures and, if possible, independently.
Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.
