On farm test based selective dry cow therapy - reducing the use of antibiotic dry cow treatment in dairy cattle farming
The aim of the project is to develop and implement an innovative concept for antibiotic-minimised, selective drying-off of dairy cows. The development of such a concept serves to specifically reduce the use of antibiotics when drying off dairy cows in order to minimise the risk of the emergence of antibiotic resistance without endangering udder health. Such a concept includes the integration of different herd- and cow-associated factors as well as the consideration of the microorganisms involved. The implementation of such a concept also requires the development and integration of a rapid test that enables a therapy decision to be made at the individual animal or quarter level. The focus of the project is on the further development of competitive, resource-conserving and animal species-appropriate production systems in conventional and organic animal husbandry, which thus makes an important contribution to the conservation of resources and the improvement of animal health and welfare.
In this project, a concept for selective dry cow therapy was developed which could be individually adapted to the specific needs of each dairy farm. The focus of this concept was an on-farm rapid test that supported farmers in making treatment decisions for cows before drying off. This led to a targeted use of antibiotic dry cow therapy for the cows that could benefit from it, thus saving antibiotic doses for the remaining cows. Farmers were concurrently trained in various aspects of udder health, enabling them to assess and improve it and also to respond to herd udder health changes on their farms. As a result, farmers' concerns about reduced antibiotic usage were alleviated. Depending on the initial conditions in the participating farms, udder health improvement coupled with antibiotic reduction was achieved to varying degrees through the learned concepts. The established concept of dry cow therapy can be applied to other German dairy farms, ...(see final report)
