High-value agricultural substance: phycocyanin as driver of Lower Saxony algae production
The aim of the project is to create a new value chain that will make the still young branch algae production in Lower Saxony competitive in the long term and to make greater use of the large market potential of algae towards primary producers. The project focuses on produced Arthrospira (Spirulina) fresh material, which will be directly processed at the production site to a phycocyanin extract. The farmer acts on the one hand as a producer of the biomass and on the other hand as an extractor. The extract, which can already be used as a food additive, can then be marketed to product developing companies at significantly higher price. The process of extraction is also intended to enable further refinement and processing of the valuable material in the downstream area and is therefore also of interest for pharmaceutical companies.
Appropriate cultivation conditions regarding growth medium, light induction and strain selection for optimal Spirulina growth conditions and Phycocyanin production in Spirulina are identified.
A new, robust extraction process for the highly valuable protein pigment C-Phycocyanin from spirulina was established. We are of the opinion that this extraction process can be conducted by agriculturally skilled farm workers. We are able to make practically informed suggestions for a further upscaling of the process.
The extraction plant, which was built within the framework of this project, reliably achieves higher CPC concentrations and purities than that of European competitors. Its product therefore is highly likely to qualify for use as a food pigment and as a nutraceutical. The operational group successfully achieved an increase in shelf life. Conditions are therefore set for further improvement of the novel CPC product.
