Project Title

Cultivation, harvesting and processing of hemp straw and hemp seeds

Project description

The hemp plant is regarded as one of the oldest useful plants on earth. Despite the many possible uses of the individual plant parts, there are hardly any cultivation areas in Germany. This poses various challenges for the development of a value-added chain to the hemp plant. A first difficulty is the lack of locally adapted hemp varieties. Furthermore, high transport costs and long transport distances of the harvesting technology impair the economic efficiency of hemp cultivation. Last but not least, there are hardly any empirical values on the different demands on conveying technology, drying and storage of hemp seeds.

The OG has therefore set itself the goal of establishing hemp cultivation in the Werra-Meißner district with as many value-added chains as possible. Here, both the partial processing of the hemp plant on site as well as the optimization of the cultivation and the breeding of plants adapted to the location are planned. In the long term it is planned to ensure the processing of the entire hemp plant into various products (hemp straw for hemp fibre, hemp seeds for seeds, hemp oil, hemp nuts for bakeries and hemp nuts for animal feed).

Results focusing on practiceorientation

The cultivation of hemp was tested on the fields of the farms and optimised using field trials, and the best possible fertiliser quantities and cultivation dates were determined for the available areas. The investment in a specially customised round baler for hemp straw brought the desired efficiency in the recovery of the hemp straw from the field. The planned investment in partial processing for hemp straw has not been realised. Experience in cultivation has shown that the required qualities of the hemp for subsequent further processing into hemp for stuffing cannot be guaranteed in the cultivation area due to the weather conditions in autumn, and an alternative has been created: The shredding of the hemp straw and subsequent pelletisation. In the area of sales, many new and economically promising marketing channels have been opened up, and the test sales from the project indicate that the project has been a success.
