Project Title

Testing innovative farming strategies for upland organic dairy farming

Project description

Due to the prevailing natural conditions upland organic farms frequently produce milk. To succeed they need a stable feed production with high yields. The project aims at testing new crop cultivation methods for upland organic farming to improve yields and to increase yield stability. Three approaches will be tested in particular: a) fostering plant growth of maize at early growth stages, b) deriving a cultivation method for a more yield stable and protein rich upland grain legumes production, and c) improving yield stability of winter oilseed rape through an appropriate preceding crop and mixed farming with winter pea.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

Cultivation of corn on dams significantly accelerated juvenile development and yield and is thus recommended for mid-mountain locations. Seed priming, on the other hand, did not prove to be effective in terms of yield in the open field.
Regarding the cultivation of grain legumes alone and mixtures, the following should be noted:

(a) with summer field bean alone or in a mixture with oats, the highest protein yields per unit area can be obtained under midland conditions.

b) the cultivation of two grain legume species in a mixture as well as the cultivation of narrow-leaved lupine alone did not prove successful.

c) The cultivation of winter grain legumes alone as well as in a mixture with non-legumes is not suitable for low mountain sites due to the strong yield fluctuations.

With regard to the preceding crop effect for winter rape, winter wheat, combined with a digestate application in the fall, is most suitable.
