Development of a screening tool for the monitoring of contagious mastitis pathogens in dairy herds using automated milking systems (OG Masti-Screen)

Project description

A mastitis screening tool for the detection of intramammary infections with contagious mastitis pathogens was developed for dairy herds using automated milking systems (AMS). As inflammation or an increase of somatic cell count is frequently missed in subclinical infections, detection of the infectious agent itself is the only reliable method for early diagnosis. To establish an early warning system, PCR methods were applied for samples collected automatically in herd improvement programmes (e. g. milk yield recording). Since these specimen are unsterile, they are not suitable for bacteriological cultivation. To identify samples suitable for the systematic screening of cows with a higher mastitis risk in AMS herds, colostrum was tested by bacterial cultivation. During the last stage of the project, the early warning system and the monitoring of cows at high risk for mastitis were established in AMS herds to improve their udder health.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

The aim is to establish a threshold for early indication of increasing infection rates. Regarding the cultivation of pathogens from colostrum samples, a reduced but still appropriate sensitivity for the detection of intramammary infections is expected compared to mature milk. If this can be confirmed, colostrum samples will be used to monitor cows at higher mastitis risk. Implementation of this new mastitis screening system in AMS herds will facilitate a decrease of mastitis cases and subsequent losses. The use of antibiotics strictly according to the results of susceptibility testing should markedly reduce the application of fluoroquinolones and cephalosporines in mastitis.
