More sustainable milk
Rhineland-Palatinate dairy farms are struggling because of
- Increasing requirements of the food retail trade for feeding
- Stronger linking of subsidies to environmental performance
- Increased price volatility
- Climate change + extreme weather
The question arises as to how individual farms can adapt to these changes and requirements and how the Rhineland-Palatinate dairy industry can maintain its competitiveness.
The motivation is to use the locational advantages in Rhineland-Palatinate to strengthen the competitiveness of the dairy chain. The comprehensive requirements are to be translated by new technologies into a more sustainable production system that has a lower CO2 footprint and closes the local nutrient cycle. Innovations (e.g. NIR analysis, site-specific sowing and fertilization), which are used on the farms in an overarching production system, evaluated and transferred to other farms, help to achieve this. The aim is to improve the competitiveness of Rhineland-Palatinate dairy farms by enabling them to produce more sustainable milk.
Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.
