Strategies to reduce herbicide use in root crops through innovative hoeing systems
Hesse is endeavouring to reduce the use of pesticides. It is therefore also necessary for conventional farms to establish practical methods to supplement chemical plant protection strategies. The aim of the project is to test combinations of mechanical and chemical methods for weed control in root crops to reduce the use of herbicides in practice in order to optimise the control methods depending on the site and weather conditions and thus identify the methods with the highest degree of effectiveness. In addition to the combination of commercially available computer-aided hoeing technology and chemical plant protection, innovative features include the recording of the degree of weed coverage before and after treatment using a drone to monitor effectiveness and the use of mobile, web-based automatic weather stations at the trial sites. On-farm experiments are being carried out on six farms in sugar beet and maize with various combinations of chemical treatment (customary) and chemical-mechanical weed control.
Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.
