Seed multiplication and development of organic cereal varieties in the federal state of Hessen
In organic farming, only a small proportion of organic varieties, i.e. varieties from organic breeding, are currently used, although they are optimally suited to organic farming and offer a number of advantages such as resistance, especially to seed-borne diseases, and better adaptation to the availability of nutrients under organic farming conditions. One possible reason for the low market penetration of organically bred varieties is the inadequately developed structures for the propagation of these varieties. The project therefore aims to improve the availability and quality of organically bred cereal seed and varieties in Hesse and beyond. This includes the fundamental reorganisation and expansion of the existing propagation structures. In addition, both the processes and quality management in seed propagation are to be improved. To this end, the establishment of a specialised operation for pre-basic and basic seed propagation on a farm was monitored and evaluated.
A fundamental reorganization of the basic and Z-seed propagation of organically bred cereal varieties in Hesse took place. This was comprehensively monitored, documented, and evaluated. The results can be transferred to other regions. A package of measures was developed for the expansion, quality assurance and improvement of seed multiplication of organically bred varieties. It clearly shows how important an intensive exchange is for successful quality management, in addition to efficient controls and clean work, especially to be able to react to changing cultivation qualities and requirements from the market/further propagation stages. The propagation of pre-basic and basic seed of organically bred cereal varieties has developed and become well established. Supply bottlenecks have been largely avoided and the acceptance rate for lots is close to 100%.
