Early acoustic detection of grain storage insect pests (Beetle Sound Tube)
Pests can cause enormous direct and indirect losses in agricultural supply stores and are often not detected until a mass infestation occurs. In a five-year project, 12 OG partners developed the "Beetle Sound Tube" system. The system is used for early detection of insects damaging stocks in grain storage facilities in order to provide more options for stock protection, such as the use of beneficial insects. The system was successfully tested in four farms over four years with small silos, flat stores and big bags. The system consists of perforated tubes, an acoustic trap and evaluation software. The software analyses the data collected in the acoustic trap and informs the storekeeper about possible infestations. The "Beetle Sound Tube" system is available in a mobile and permanently installed version. Further results from the project, general advice on stock protection and application instructions for the system can be found in the practical brochure.
In the project, the early detection system "Beetle Sound Tube" system was installed, tested and further developed on four farms. It consists of a perforated tube with a microphone and a collecting container. In the operating environment on the farms (silo, flat storage, big bag, 18 m high silo), the system was further developed, the technology simplified (acoustics, data recording, data logger) and evaluation software developed. The system is permanently installed in the silo, flat storage or big bag during the grain storage period and enables acoustic detection of pests in the grain. The long perforated tubes have also proven to be very effective beetle traps because a large area of the warehouse could be sampled directly with them. Infestations were thus detected much earlier than with conventional detection methods. This facilitates early treatment of the infestation, e.g. by using beneficial insects.
