Development of a holistic sustainability standard for fruit growing
The “Fair'n Green” (FNG) sustainability standard, which has been successful in viticulture, is to be adapted to fruit growing and applied in pilot farms in NRW.
To this end, fruit growers, representatives of the trade and consumers as well as other stakeholders in the fruit industry will be systematically involved in the project. The sustainability requirements of the fruit farms are addressed on a farm-specific basis by means of expert advice.
In addition to personal advice, emissions analyses (including CO2 footprint) and modern IT systems (digitalization) are used in a holistic approach.
A corresponding seal of quality for sustainable fruit (“Fair'n Green”) will increasingly be an important differentiating feature in the food industry for direct marketing and trade-oriented businesses.
A cost and benefit analysis (added value) of the certification system and a comparison with already established certifications serve as the basis of the project. The OG uses innovative methods for decision analysis in order to design a practice-oriented model of the complex system based on stakeholder knowledge.
